RotaxOwner Admin created the topic: CALL FOR VIDEO SUGGESTIONS
We're firming up our 2017 schedule of video production, and I would love to get some more input directly from you, our users.

Please reply this thread with a post describing a specific topic you would like to see covered in an upcoming ROTAX-OWNER video. It could be for any of our aircraft engines (2-stroke, or 4-stroke).
If there is any repair, installation, or maintenance procedure that you think would benefit from further video exposition - I'd like to hear about it.

One topic per post, please!

Some suggestions for instruction video's:

I have a 582 so my requests are for the 2-stroke engines (There are already so many video on the 912...)

- How to measure the battery voltage; when is it charging, when is the battery bad, when is the battery full. Values for voltage and current.

- How to replace the O-ring in the rotary valve

- How to remove the complete gearbox and how to re-assemble it.

- How to measure the wear of the camshaft, big-end and piston pen as an indication of wear for the engine.

- How to secure bolts and nuts

- How does torque work with bolts and nuts

Sometimes you find video's on Youtube but is would be better is they were from Rotax.

Gr. Peter

I recently searched for a do-it-yourself video showing how to change the oil on a 912 ULS. Did not find anything. If one exists great! If not, is it possible?

I think it would be beneficial to Rotax two stroke owners to see a video or videos on how to decarbonize their two strokes.

How about a video covering the differences in the care and feeding of the 912 series of engines versus the GA Continentals and Lycomings and especially the "why"'s. For example, oil change schedule, compression test, cooling differences, carb heat/carb ice, operating RPM's, fuel types, etc.

I love the thoroughness of your videos and the attention to detail. Every aspect of the subject seems to be addressed.

Cheers,

Jerel Zarestky

Hi. It would be nice to see a video of how to disassemble a rotax 582 so as to perform a decarbon as per manteinance schedule.
Thanks

I would like to see more coverage of maintenance issues with older 912's like we all have, along the lines of the one on purging the oil system, not so much heavy sales pitch for iS's. So,

- how to do on-condition inspection of hoses and rubber parts (esp. for US experimental users with no specific regulatory requirement to meet)
- how and why to use a suspension (ring) mount rather than a bed mount
- how to make basic ignition and charging system checks
- how to remove cyls and decarbon pistons/rings

Since the introduction of the 912 iS there have been a number of updates and upgrades. The most significant of these is the introduction of the 912 iS Sport. Since this involves substantial hardware modifications I think it would be instructive to show the physical changes necessary to make the transition. A side by side comparison of the two engines would be helpful for those still in the building process so that the physical differences can be taken into account. Also, specific relative performance data could be shown as well.

Hi there.
I would like some help in your suggesting in a video of a way to remove the white corrosion that occurs on the metal surface around the gearbox area of a 912 after a winter in a draughty damp hangar!

Having spend several hours last year over a few days testing every electrical component on resistance hoping it was not the ignition modules causing our intermediate but degenerating starting problems; (enter rant stage left: Monopolised, overtly expensive to replace and inaccessible for the replacement of a couple of pounds worth of poorly chosen and inaccessible components, second only to the carb rubber design!); which it did turn out to be. I was going to suggest a video on testing and diagnosis of the ignition circuit and modules.

However I see Daniel Leach got there first, so I second his nomination, even if I don't win.

Second suggestion; how to change the lord mounts on sub frame without removing the engine or risk bending the sub frame.

I would like to see a video of the procedure (generic)for the 5 Year Rubber Replacement of the Rotax 912 engine. This could be of just an engine (not installed in any airframe) and go step by step from Fuel, to Coolant, to Lubrication, to what else.

Paying attention to the various do's, don'ts, and what to look for's in each area. An example is how to identify a "Teflon Fuel Hose".

I agree with Rich Provenzano that a video on 2-stroke decarbonisation would be really useful.

The videos are excellent but too many of them focus on the 912, for which there is already a lot of detailed information available.

Best

In reply to Richard Wademan's query about removing white aluminium oxide corrosion from the exterior surfaces of engine components, I would suggest rubbing with a mild abrasive pad (such as a maroon Scotchbrite 3M pad - www.cromwell.co.uk/SCH2457002C ) soaked in parafin or ACF-50 ( www.acf-50.co.uk/ ).

Once the corrosion has been removed and the surface dried, protect the metal with a few passes of clear engine lacquer from an aerosol can.

This has worked for me. It can be laborious to get corrosion and dirt off the engine surfaces with a pad and parafin but it seems effective.

I would like to suggest a topic as people like me who bought a Rotax engine 912ULS used and do not know who was the first owner who has registered the motor, we could have access to or reregister engine to have a historic engine since new.
Tks

I would like to suggest a video on owner checks and removal/installation for the 912/914 gearbox. For example, measurement of gear lash, friction torque, and break away torque. When should these checks be done? Etc
I enjoy the videos...Thanks
