I have been inspecting Champion and Tempest oil filters for 15 years. Easy and clean job.
I now have 2 rotax engines on my Air Cam. I just completed the 1st oil change. I then proceeded to
try and open and inspect the rotax oil filters. I used the same technique I used on my Champion filters and it was a disaster. I let the rotax filter drain for 2 days. Nothing drained out. When I started removing the outside case, oil went everywhere. The filter element would not just slide out of the case. I had to use a screwdriver to pry it out.
It is a every short in height filter. I finally got the filter element out for inspection. Good news, Not one fleck of metal.

Do owners normally inspect the rotax filters?
What is the technique for getting all the oil out of the filter before cutting it open?
Do rotax owners normally get a oil analysis done?
My oil filter cutter I have used for years did not work every well on the rotax filter. It there a special cutter?

Thanks,

I always inspect my filter! My method it to cut open the shell and drain the oil inside, take your time and you should not have a mess. Then cut out the filter with a razor knife and inspect for metal. That inspection combined with the magnet inspection on the case is all i worry about. If I found metal over the specs in the manual then I might go further on testing the oil. Thats my take on it.

I cut open my filter as Chris said on every oil change. So far (550 hours) nearly nothing. About every 3rd or 4th oil change I send in a sample for analysis to establish a baseline in case of future changes.

A common bread knife is actually better than a razor knife in this application. less chance to injury and less effort!
First pull out the metal crimp that holds the matting together (use pliers or side-cutters to lever/pull it out)
Then you can cut all the way around the edge of the matt.

This is pretty much how I inspect oil filter. I do use a smaller jar vs the big one in the video, but all else is the same.
