Alert Service Bulletin:
Checking of the correct positioning of sealing plug in ignition housing for ROTAX® Engine Type 912 i (Series)

Field observation has shown that in isolated cases the sealing plug was not pressed to its correct seating position in the ignition housing. In rare cases this may lead to loss of oil and subsequently loss of lubrication which leads to engine stoppage.

A simple visual check allows you to verify whether or not your engine may be affected.

Position shown in the photo above is OK - the top of the spherical plug is pressed in far enough: "below the lip".

This Alert Service Bulletin applies to a limited serial number range of 912iS / 912iS Sport engines and 912iSc / 912iSc Sport engines.

In addition, this ASB applies to any 912 i (series) engines which have been equipped with an engine housing part number 611594 during maintenance, repair, or overhaul prior to June 1st, 2017.

And a limited range of spare part stator sets with part number 685062 should also be checked (see the bulletin for part serial number ranges).

Did you have access to the "special tool"?

No, but I do have access to a lathe.
I took a 1/4" x 6" Bolt and turned the last 6mm down to ~3mm diameter.
A shallow countersink in the 3mm end allowed it to self-center on the ball.
A couple of wacks with a hammer and the job was done.

I have used these before in other machinery we used to manufacture.
This one seemed to be harder to set than I remember.
But we used to use a hand press to seat them.
Maybe that is why some of these were not seated.

Actually, they look like they are still new and they just forgot to apply the finishing touch.

Can I, as a Rotax iRMT, sign off the logbook for the inspection?

Yes, an iRMT tech (iS-certified) should carry out the inspection, and then mark the bulletin as complied with in the engine logbook.

as per the ASB:

"All measures must be implemented and confirmed by at least one of the following persons or
organizations:
- ROTAX® - Authorized Distributors or their independent Service Centers
- Persons with approved qualifications for the corresponding engine types. Only authorized persons (relevant iRMT Level) are entitled to carry out this work."

I think he wanted to know if the IRMT (only certification) was LEGAL or if he also had to be an RLSM-A or an A&P?

Is that what you wanted to know Jim?

Yes. PS - I was not aware of a 912iS specific designation.

In the US it would take the LSRM-A or an A&P. This wouldn't fit under the FAA per use of owner maint. and of course an IRMT is good to. :)

The only prerequisite for a Rotax IRMT class is to be current in the previous course. Anyone can buy an IRMT certificate, you don't need an FAA mechanic or repairman rating to qualify. The IRMT is NOT a standalone certificate, it can NOT substitute for an FAA required rating.

If you are in the US, there are requirements to work on an aircraft based, based on how that aircraft is licensed. If you have a Type Certificated Aircraft, generally only an A&P can work on it. If you have an S-LSA, you need an LSRM or an A&P. If you are Experimental (including E-LSA), anyone can do anything thing…short of a condition inspection.

@Jim Flock

About "iS-specific" designations...

If an "iS" bulletin calls for iRMT "Line maintenance" qualifications, these can be obtained by taking the iS maintenance course (prerequisite: an iRMT "service" rating). Typically you would obtain the iRMT "iS" Service rating by taking some additional 'iS' modules 'bundled in' while attending a regular 912 Service class.

If an "iS" bulletin calls for iRMT "Heavy maintenance" qualifications, these can only be obtained by taking the iS Heavy Maintenance course - which requires that you already have iS-Maintenance, and other prerequisites...

This is all covered in detail in the Service Instruction SL-912-019 / SL-912 i-008 /SL-914-017 / SL-2ST-011 which was released back in March of this year:
