I signed on to this new forum hoping to find some two stroke Rotax owners ...but it appears I am the only one in existence. I have been flying an Avid Flyer behind a Rotax 532 for several years and have another identical 532 with Zero time sitting in my shed waiting, if needed, to be installed.

No sudden stoppages, no forced landings, no strange odors in the cockpit. In other words, no horror stories of any kind. I am replacing the leaking fuel tank in the wing. And no, I am not in the market for a 4 stroke or any other "upgrade".

I guess the $29.95 USD question is; is there anybody else out there? Surely I am not the only one left in the world.

Hi John,
No, you are not alone in this ring ding world. I flew a Beaver RX550 ultralight all over Canada for 26 years. All 1000+ hours were with Rotax two strokes. First, a single points ignition 503 and then upgraded to the 582 Model 99. Both engines worked great but I loved the 582. If it weren’t for two strokes, I probably never would have taken up flying as a hobby. I hope that Rotax continues to produce the 582 and I would like to see them re-introduce an upgraded 503.
I recently sold my beloved Beaver RX550 (owned since new 1987) to help finance my new airplane, I am building a Zenith CH750 and have joined the dark side and am installing a... gasp.... four stroke 912iS. I guess it was time for me to move on...
John, enjoy that 532 and keep on flying the most fun segment of aviation.
Cheers,
Joe

Joe,
Just bought myself a RX550 plus with a seized 582. What can you tell me about flying and maintenance of a RX550?
Thanks
David

David,
I would tell you, but it would be the size of a book...:-) (and I am too lazy and I kant spel varie goud..) If I could offer any advice, go to one of the Rotax maintenance and operation courses and then follow the Rotax recommendations. I flew my Beaver lots and slowly gained the knowledge to run it properly, which it turned out, was in the Rotax manuals all along...! If I bought another UL with a two stroke, I would put a brand new engine on it, follow the maintenance schedule religiously and then would have it totally overhauled by an approved Rotax shop at the recommended 300 TBO. Not probably what you want to hear and not what I did at the time, but it is what I would do now, knowing what I know now.
Good luck,
Joe
