I am a new member of Rotaxowner and a new member of EAA.

I am working with a missionary pilot in Papua New Guinea who recently took ownership of a Zenith 701 aircraft.

We are now seeking an engine and looking at the Rotax 912. Problem is in New Guinea they only get 87 octane fuel. In looking as specs for the current 912-80 hp, I see required "leaded, unleaded, AVGAS 100LL or E10".

Question: is anybody aware of who current engines will work with 87 octane? Alternatively, if we buy an older engine, will it handle 87 octane?

Additional question: Does anybody have an engine what would work with 87 octane for sale, OR know where we can purchase a used one??

Thank you.

The 912 Operators Manual , Page 2-9, Shows that the 912UL, 80Hp engine is good for Minimum RON 90 or AKI 87 fuel.
Note: The older versions of the manual have the AKI 87 Spec that the newest manual has missing as a misprint.

AKI 87 is a GO for the 80Hp, 912 UL.

NO-GO for the 100Hp, 912 ULS which need RON 95, AKI 91.

Bill,

Thank you for the informative, authoritative information. I have forwarded it to our group of people building the Zenith 701.

Question: Do you own or fly/repair a Rotax 912? Which model? How is it working for you?

Thank you.
