Are there any comments on the build and quality of the latest rotax oil filter .
My maintainer is a little concerned that there seems to be a reduction in the surface area of the filter paper found inside.
What are the effects of reducing the number of folds in a filter ?
To me it seems that if a filter has reduced oil contact area then it will clog up sooner . Is this a issue considering thst a filter will be replaced at least every 100 hrs.

The new oil filter is just fine. There are no issues. The new style oil filter has a wrench you can buy from the Service Centers that work very well in installing and removing the filter. Most of us that I know change oil and filter at 25 hrs. for 100LL use and 50 hrs. for 91 oct. use. I know the manual says more for 91 oct., but I don't know of anyone doing that. Even in class most recommend 50 for 91 oct. Always check the magnetic oil plug at each oil change.
The oil is the blood of the engine just like our body blood. Disease or contaminate that and your lifespan is reduced in the person or engine. It's cheap insurance and good medical practice :) to take care of both.

    p.s.
The wrench can be extremely helpful. I just had an aircraft come in and a top organization did the last oil change. The filter was on so tight I had to use all my weight to eventually unscrew the filter. There were indentations all over the filer where they use oil canister pliers on it. These if not careful can punch a hole in the canister. ALWAYS when using pliers type tool to grab only the steel ring at the base of the filter. Never the thin walled canister. Without the oil wrench I would have had to cut the filter off. Applying it as tight as they did distorts the base of the oil filter where it screws on. This damages and negates the by-pass spring setup inside. The filter just gets screwed on until it touches and then only 270 degree (3/4 turn) after that. Buy the oil wrench for approximately $26 and you won't be sorry. It makes it easy to do filters and gets into tight places without ever damaging the filter.

    Roger.....
Last time Rotax changed the filter (wasn't that about three years ago?) they made it a tad longer, and that tiny increase caused significant hassles for some of us in terms of insufficient clearance between the tip of the filter and the exhaust header during the remove and replace filter operation.

Please tell me that the new filter isn't even longer than the version it replaces?
