Rinus,

Castrol is a good brand. I use Pennzoil two stroke mineral oil for air cooled engines. There are many good brands out there to choose from. There are a couple of things to consider. If your engine often sits for weeks at a time, I would stay away from the 100% synthetics. They don't offer the same corrosion protection that mineral based oils do. There are many companies that offer a blend of synthetic and mineral oil which would give you the best points of both oils. Be sure that you get one that is designed for air cooled engines. Although the 582 is water cooled, it operates at the high temperatures of an air cooled engine and the oils designed for outboards and other water cooled engines don't offer the same lubrication and can leave more deposits on the plugs, heads, and piston crowns. Ring sticking can be a problem also. TC or TC11 ratings are OK but stay away from anything rated TCW (two cycle water cooled).

Bill.

Hi!

I use YACCO AVX500 2T, for three engines: Rotax 503DCDI, Rotax 462UL & Rotax 582UL Mod.90.
AVX500 (former MVX500 by YACCO) is to be found in the Rotax Operators Manual.

Best regards,
Dragos

I just bought a case of Aeroshell.

I was running Pennzoil like Bill. The Aeroshell is expensive so if there isn't an appreciable difference after the annual borescope I may go back.

Roger would it be ok using any brand of oil as long as it conforms to all the Rotax spec in the manual,

The main agent for Rotax in the UK only supply semi synthetic 2 stroke oil now...as far as I know its motor cycle based like as you recommend.

Hi Nick,

I messed up on my post. It was written with the 4 stroke 912 in my head and not a 2 stroke. I don't know what I was thinking. What's wrong with the Aero Shell Sport plus 2 you have there. It is made there.
The answer is; many people around the world use different oils for their 2 stroke because not all oils are available in each location. I would either use what the dealer supplies or another good brand of two stroke oil that blends at a 50:1 ratio. If you mix it yourself for an older engine then 50:1 is a good ratio. If it is oil injected then the ratio is already set up. I have personally gone over to synthetics over the years because they seem to have a better over all quality to them and handle the stresses of high temps, low temps, usually better combustion characteristics and less issues in the cylinders than many of the straight dino oils. The synthetics seem to help engines get to TBO better and be in better overall condition when they get to TBO.
The bottom line is it is your decision and I would use what you have in your location that has been working well for everyone else. It is usually better to let someone else be the Guinea pig and see after hundreds or thousands of hours how well something performs before you use it in your engine.

Thanks for that Roger...re fully synthetic...in our damp climate over here there is talk of it not being as good as semi synthetic at rust prevention in the engine internals if the engine is not used on a more or less daily basis...what are you thoughts in that regard.

Hi Nick,

I think the synthetics are usually superior to most regular dino oils and for the corrosion and rust side too. The nice thing about synthetics is they can be a little more tailored made than the old dino oils of 30 years ago.

What is the best 2 stroke oil to use for my Rotax 503. I was told that Amsoil would be the one to use.

According to ROTAX, you can take your pick of these:
