Lane lights on in flight was created by Cluemeister
On a recent test flight with a rotax 915 aircraft, the lane B light came on as we were coming in on approach. The engine was at 3700 rpm. We attempted to switch the lane B off and then back on, but the warning light did not go off. Instead, shortly after, the lane A light came on. At this point both lane lights were solid. We purposely picked up a little more altitude in case the engine quit, so we could make the runway just in case. Luckily it did not, and about 10 seconds later both lane lights went off. Landing was uneventful. The question for those who have flown or serviced the 915, has this happened to any of you, or have you heard it happening? It seems very similar to the lane light problems in the 912is, so that’s what we found discouraging. Thoughts?

You will need to connect a Buds Dongle to the ECU to find out what the fault was. Without this data anyone would simply be guessing at the cause.

Where can you purchase a level 2 BUDS dongle?

Check with your regional service center. If they don't have one then call another service center.

You should look at the similar problems I have been dealing with the 912iS. In summary, you may be able to purchase the $1000 dongle, like I did, but the results are nearly impossible to understand and trouble shoot unless you get the software that will explain and help you understand the error messages. This has been a big problem that rotax needs to fix but has failed to support the pilots and rotax mechanics in the field.

If you want the full story see the 912iS post "BUDS dongle ECU download error code messages reference" to see what WE ARE ALL facing as owners/operators/mechanics with the 912iS and NOW with the 915. Welcome to the club.

Simple fix but rotax refuses to fix it/help us.

That's very frustrating Paul. Have you gotten an official/written response from Rotax corporate when you brought this to their attention?

Cluemeister, no I have not pursued this directly with top rotax management. I would assume they would monitor customer feedback through forums such as this to improve there product. I have found that real life customer feedback is one of the most important aspects of improving a product.

Amazingly, Bryan Toepher from CPS has been able to respond quickly to diagnose the problem BUT it just happened that I was able to contact him. Running a business that requires the rotax engine to be running can not allow some waiting period when he is out of contact/service.

I have thousands of hours on the rotax carb engines and have no problem figuring out what is the problem. The fuel injected engines is a different story.

Hopefully rotax will get the message. Right now I am steering people away from the fuel injected 912 and 915 engine because of this problem.

Question - are the dongles interchangeable between the 912iS and 915iS or are they engine specific?
