G'day All, I have a new 582 Blue Head engine coming up for the 50 hour maintenance service.

The service schedule calls for the pistons to be inspected for carbon build up on the crown and head. If more than 0.5mm in thickness then remove the carbon build up. Also calls for the piston rings to be inspected to ensure they are moving freely within the correct placement grooves, if not then removal of the rings and a clean is called for.

Given that I have read many accounts of these engines doing more than 300 hours without being opened up; My question is, how can you check the piston crown and cylinder head, and the piston rings, without removing the head and cylinders?

    Removal of the exhaust manifold will normally give you visuals on piston crown and rings Ian.

    Yes, I will do that. I also have access to a boroscope I can use to inspect inside the cylinder through the spark plug hole. Not sure I will be able to adequately check the piston rings though - guess I should just give it a go and see what happens.

    Ian,

    When you remove the exhaust manifold, you will be able to see at least that portion of the rings quite clearly. Also the entire piston crown and most of the cylinder wall. Best way I've found to check for ring play is to run the piston up until you can see the rings, then with your finger, smear a generous amount of 2 cycle oil onto the exposed rings. When you move the piston up and down very slightly, you can see the oil squeezing in out of the ring groove as the ring moves up and down in the groove. Almost impossible to see the movement otherwise.

    The top of the piston will probably be black with possibly a clear spot here and there. Black is normal. If there is very little buildup, you may be able to see the piston numbers stamped in the crown with a borescope. Another indication all is well.

    You may notice on the far side of the cylinder wall a couple of vertical lines which appear to be scores in the cylinder
    wall. This is where the ring ends are located and these marks are normal also.

    Bill with modern clean burning 2 stroke oil what the current thinking on de-coking at 50 hours,

    I know some folk these days goto 100hrs especially is using fully synthetic oil.

    I'll take your advice into account when I do the inspection through the exhaust ports. I like the idea of smearing the oil on the rings to detect movement.

    Nick, I am using Castrol Active 2T oil exclusively in this engine.

    By the way, the engine is running extremely well with all vital signs in 'the green' so to speak. The only 'blip' being unable to achieve more than 6200 RPMs at WOT. But that has been discussed before, and is probably due to the prop configuration.
