Short answer: No, don’t rely on the solenoid mounting bolt as the ground unless the aircraft manufacturer specifically designed it that way.
On the Rotax 2 stroke installations, some starter solenoids are “case grounded” for the control circuit only, but the starter motor and battery must have dedicated ground cables. Rotax requires the battery negative to be grounded directly to the engine crankcase, with the starter grounding through the engine. The engine is then bonded to the airframe with a separate ground strap.
Using the solenoid mounting hardware as a ground can introduce resistance (paint, corrosion, isolation mounts) and lead to voltage drop, slow cranking, or intermittent “no start” issues.
