Dear Rotax Group,

So I finally finished rebuilding my Kolb Firestar and its Rotax 503 DCDI and its flying/running great. Considering how long my airplane sat I have to say that things are going well. However, I do have one issue. The engine starts right up, and ignition check at anything over 2100 RPM checks fine but if the engine RPM gets bellow 2100, and I try the ignition check, the engine quits when I switch one of the modules. It happens on only one module as it runs fine on just the other so I guess I am starting the engine on the good one and as RPM goes up the other picks up.

I will doing a complete check of resistances on the module and its coil but I wonder if anyone has any suggestion regarding this issue. During the rebuild I did have to change the pickup wires on the modules since the insulation had turned to mush (very annoying considering how much these units cost) but i would be surprised if that is causing the issue.

As I mentioned, the engine starts very easily and runs great, even at idle (on one module I assume), but that module dropping off at low RPM has me worried.

Thanks for the help,
Chris

Your ignition check is supposed to be done between 3000 -3500 RPM as per the Rotax operators manual.

Doing this check below this RPM range will not provide you with adequate results.

10.3.6) Checking of ignition unit (not possible for 447 UL SCDI)
Before every flight or operation, the function of the two ignition
systems must be checked. For checking the ignition unit the engine
must be operated at 3000 to 3500 1/min and alternately ignition
system 1 and 2 must be switched off. The RPM-drop must not
    exceed max. 300 1/min.
