Thermal paste --- what is it? --- what's it used for?

Thermal conducting paste is used a lot in the electronics industry. It does just what it implies. I evenly conducts or transfers heat across two surfaces. We use it on the 912 plugs to make transfer heat between plugs and heads more evenly. Since it is a silicone it also acts as a thread lubricant to help prevent galling. Do not use this on the 2 strokes. I can be purchased from many places and is easy to come by. Apply it to the top 2/3 of the 912 plug threads. Be careful not to get it on the electrode or it will cause miss fires. It is silicone based and won't burn off. In this case less is more so apply it sparingly and do not glob it on. You can get it from Rotax dealers or electronic shops. It is usually white.

    p.s.
Do not use anti seize on the 912 plugs. That's old school A&P stuff and I see it way too often. Matter of fact several of the GA people on my field have switched from anti seize to thermal conducting paste. Time to move into the 21st century.

    Kurt,

Thermal paste is used on the plug threads to improve the transfer of heat away from the plug to the engine block. Do not put on the last 4 or 5 threads nearest the end of the plug and be sure not to get any on the plug tip. It won't burn off and can foul the plug.

Thanks for the quick response. Does it also act as an anti seize too!

    Hi Kurt,

Yes it does. The main purpose is for heat transfer, but it does a good job for as a thread lubricant too.
