Had a problem with the Ducati voltage regulator almost from new causing noise in the radio, cooking the capacitor with an output voltage all over the place. This is partly caused by the method of regulation in the Ducati unit. Replacing the unit with with "Powermate" solved the problem. The output is now a constant 14.1 volts under all conditions. One of the wires from this unit goes to a LED to indicate if the system is charging and should it flicker during flight then there is a problem with the engine alternator. My hangar partner had a problem with the Ducati voltage regulator start regulating to 16 volts cooking the battery, again a replacement with a Powermate. The only defect for using Powermate is the lower maximum current available of 8 amps. and the need to place the unit in a cool area of the cowling or supply cooling air to it, it has a thermostat to cut off the current flow if the unit reaches 75 C, again the red LED will indicate should this happen. Many Rotax engines on ultra lights at another airfield have had to replace the Ducati units after cooking their radios - after the second replacement against warranty the radio manufacturer requests replacement of the Ducati unit due to over voltage and noise.

    Dale,

The new regulator fixed the problem. I'm hoping it stays fixed. I'm flying XC 300 miles tomorrow so will be a good test.

I will look at the "Powermate" and see if the factory will give an LOA to change over.

    Thanks,

    Raymond

Hi Dale, Powermate is a product that is made in Australia and not a company line. It uses a different route to control the voltage and is very stable and free from electronic noise. This different method of control means that all the excess coming from the alternator must be dissipated in the unit - hence the protection from high temperatures.

    Raymond,
After I changed my regulator at 300 hours it has been trouble free till now at 800 hours, so you probably will be good to go.
