You are right about turning the prop after the oil change to fill the newer style oil filter (20-30 turns). You should leave the plugs in.

    Hi Rodger

You need to remove the plugs so that you can turn the prop enough to pump the oil. Also there will be no compression and so no or at least only a little loading on the main and big ends while there is no pressure. The blow by gases push the oil back to the tank, but not having the spark plugs in won't affect the oil being pumped to the engine after an oil change as it is the oil pump sucking the oil from the tank and pushing it through the filter into the engine.

    Cheers Mark

The reason I am saying this is because Roger said you had to leave the plugs in because it is crankcase pressure that helps pump the oil, but he has deleted his post. I was just replying to this statement.

Here is the video of the oil change and rotating the prop.

    Hi Roger

I know the video leaves the plugs in, but it is better for the engine and easier to turn the prop and get the pressure back up if you do take them out. It makes sense and anything that can reduce wear on very soft bearing surfaces must be a good thing.

When I was an apprentice, my foreman would have had a heart attack if we didn't prime the oil filter and turn the engine over without any plugs in when we did an oil change.

I just like doing things the right way, even if it does take a bit more time.

    Old habits die hard.

    Cheers Mark

I'm about to do my first oil change, and it's not absolutely clear to me whether I need to purge the system after I've removed and replaced the oil tank for internal cleaning.

My apologies if this has been thrashed out already.

    Terry.
