I was out flying this morning (912UL) and after a few circuits the charge rate went to the maximum on the gauge. I turned on the landing light and tip lights before the rate went back to 14 volts. After a few minutes I tuned off the lights and everything was normal. It increased later on, but tuning on the lights brings everything back to normal.
Is this an indication of a failing regulator or what is the most likely culprit? I was planning a 2 hour flight tomorrow. Do you think is presents an issue?? Planing on paying close attention and running lights if necessary. The battery is only 3 months old, but is a standard auto type, not aircraft certified.
Any and all comments appreciated!
Cheers

    Hi Don,

The simple answer is yes it is possible it is starting to go, but they hold up pretty well. I would keep an eye on it and I would check all the wires into and out of the large black plug that connects to the reg/rec. Pull on them and make sure they are seated well and none are broken. Look close as a wire may be hanging by a strand or broken under the insulation. It is does it again and is unexplained then you may need to take a closer look with a meter and or swap it out for a known good one. Maybe from another 912 on your field. Just an easy way to do a quick check. Wires first.

    Don,

Also check to make sure your battery cable connections are very clean and tight.
