    Jan,

Mark is right about not needing to heat the thermostat. Oil thermostats are built to have some oil flow through them even when cold and fully closed. Every engine is different as to whether or not purgeing is necessary. It all depends on where the oil tank, oil cooler and thermostat are located.

I also think Roger is right about the purgeing. There is probably a 90% chance the engine would not need purgeing, but that leaves a 10% chance you could wreck a VERY expensive engine. A little extra work to purge is cheap insurance.

    I'm with Bill.
It's an expensive engine to take a chance when a few extra minutes of easy work will remove that possibility. If you guess wrong then just the turn of the key with only a few moments will cause the damage even if you show oil pressure. Oil pressure won't have anything to do with the air on let's say the #3 exhaust lifter.

The purge will be peace of mind and pocketbook safety.

I knew when I said I don't think you need to do a full purge I should have kept my mouth shut.

You would still need to remove your rocker covers and check your lifters after warm up.

As Rodger and Bill both say, If you do a full and proper purge, you can't go wrong.

Thanks for all the input. I will carry out a full blown oil purge.

Now I am preparing a list of items needed.

To pressurize the oil system I need an oil tank stop: where can I buy it or how can I fabricate it. What is the thread?

For the installation of the thermostat I need a U hose tube straight out the oil cooler but I can not find a suitable one in the web stores.

    Hi Jan,

I don't know where you live, but Leading Edge, CPS and Lockwood in the US has the oil tank caps. I'm sure Rotech in BC, Canada has them too. If you don't have access to them I have used a rubber stopper from the hardware store in a pinch when nothing else was available. Since you are only using air pressure of 5-15 psi then it is easy for someone to just hold their thumb on it to keep it from popping out. Do not use a cork as you don't want anything to get into the system.
The cap is the best way to go, but some people around the world don't have very good access to small parts like this cap.
You could also use a hose about 4" long and put it over the oil tank fitting and secure it with a hose clamp and then block off the other end.
As far as the hose on the oil cooler fitting that is 13mm (1/2") and can be routed as needed. The above mentioned Rotax distributors can supply that hose too.
