Leaking Fuel Pump Question

Last time I flew, while pulling the prop through to burp the engine. I noticed a small amount of fuel dripping from the back side of the fuel pump from the lower vent holes.

Does this mean the pump is bad or beginning to fail?

If its the Older Fuel Pump, I would just replace it. Mine slowly failed with Intermittent Lower fuel Pressure, then total faulire inflight, good thing I had the powered backup.

Hi Wellslake,

Yes it's on its way out the door so to speak. You will need a new pump. When you install one of the new pumps make sure your plane has a re-circulation line. You will probably notice higher fuel pressure with the new pump around 4.5 psi+/-

[hide]Without the provision of recirculating lines, is the pressure too high for the carbs? At the moment I do not have recirculating lines. Could the new style pump be installed without them and retrofitted at a later date?

Hi Wellslake,

Yes it could cause a little over pressure/flooding of the carb. It isn't hard to put a re-circulation line in. Do it at the same time. I wouldn't wait. A flooded carb in flight won't wait.

Use of an electric fuel pump (if you have one) will cause gas to flow out that weep hole. Happened to me on a cross country. Gas all over the engine. Not good.
