Hello all.

Puzzling one this  Today when starting my engine (912ULS 100HP), I noticed that the choke knob was very hard to pull out, as if something was jamming the cable.

I pulled harder, and it did come out but was very stiff. I cycled the choke a few times, and it became easier to move in and out, but still stiffer than normal. After an easy restart of the engine, I was then unable to reduce RPM to below 2250, with choke on or off. Normally it idles at around 1800 when the oil temperature has warmed up a bit. Shut down and removed the cowling. the choke cables appeared free of obstruction and cycled freely.

I flew, hoping this would clear in flight at full power and had the same thing in flight, unable to reduce power to idle on final approach. I put choke on in flight and as per normal it did not influence engine speed. I ran the engine through all regimes with no problems. I had flown the day before and all else was normal.
the engine has no history of problems and has a total time of 230 hours.
But overnight, this?

Be grateful for any suggestions.

Mike.

    Hi Mike,

Did you disconnect the cables and checked for free movements of the carb lever s. If they are smooth then check if the cables are smooth. Note there are 2 friction devices: check them.If OK then lubricate the cables or replace them.

I'm with Jan. Sounds like a sticky choke cable that needs to be lubed. As far as the high idle make sure the chokes are closing all the way. I don't think this is a carb issue, but a cable issue. Pull the choke in and out and watch the choke armatures and make sure they function all the way closed and open and it should be smooth. Make sure someone didn't bend a choke cable and make it bind.

Thanks Jan and Roger. You were both on the money. On closer inspection, the chokes were not closing all the way after all, despite smooth action on the choke cable. What had happened was this: The choke cable had frayed within the tube housing, and small barbs of wire were preventing the cable from returning to normal slack, thus keeping action on the choke and increasing my idle rpm. Could have been worse I guess!

OK Mike, now to find out why it had been frayed to prevent it from happening again!

Put a little piece of heat shrink on the cable ends. It will keep the ends from freying.
