Hi Gentelmen.

Have you heard of any problems with the Aeroshell plus 4 recommended oil for these engines? My local mechanic here said he is not using nor recommending that oil anymore due to having it found dirty many times and experiencing a different sound of the engine. He is now using a Honda HP4 (or something like that) type of oil for all his customers.

This has been going on for a few years now, and seems to be working better than the Aeroshell oil. I just bouth a case of 12 Aeroshells, but don't know what to do. My engine is an old 912UL, from 1997 with 470hrs

Any thoughts?

    Hi Fredy,

Blackened oil is normal. Any thing that burns, especially oils and fuel, produces carbon and one of the oil's job is to help suspend and remove it. A mechanic that doesn't know this would worry me and probably not someone I would put a lot of stock in. The only way to get a true measure of an oil's true protection capability is to have it tested during its duty cycle. I doubt the mechanic has that equipment. Seems like he may be one of a few verses thousands that some how knows more than Aero Shell, Rotax and all its thousands of users, even after all the lab testing. How many hundreds of Aero shell Sport plus 4 samples has he sent to the lab to check his and other owners engines? How many lab samples has he seen at all that involved Aero Shell? There are a couple of good oils out there and the one he picked is fine until he doesn't like that one either. True research of all the oils and testing from actual engines during a run cycle is the only way to know what is really working. Not just interwishen. Unless someone took more than one engine, ran them for a couple thousand hours with different oils and under identical circumstances that isn't a way for a single person to know better. There are enough good oils out there to take you to TBO and getting there is more a matter of timely maint. on the owners part verses which one of the good oils they picked.

I understand. Thanks for your input. Although I'm not sure he was reffering to the color of the oil as dirty, I agree, if there isn't anyone else having problems with this oil, it should be fine.

Any insight on why they would report a strange sound on the engine with this oil?

I have never heard of oil; causing a noise. There would have to be more to the story, like poor oil over years or many hours of flying causing some internal issue, but most likely it is totally unrelated and may need to be researched as to what the noise really is.
