My 912 ULS has suddenly started getting very hard to start. From cold (ambient temperature is about 30 degrees) it turns a bunch of times then "bang bang" kicks a bit but doesn't start. After trying this a few times, it finally gets going and then is as smooth as ever. I just did a carb sync and idle screw adjustment thinking that might be the problem but that has not helped.

I pulled a spark plug from each cylinder to check. They all look the same - see below. I think this is ok, they have a slight brown color to them. But I welcome others' views.

The starting is quite violent and it actually shook hard enough to damage the rubber coolant expansion tank protector so I'm leery of guessing at things. I'd really like to get to the suspected root cause and try to fix it before I try starting the engine again.

FYI, I recently replaced the oil with the usual Mobil 1 V-Twin synthetic that I've been recommended to use. I didn't notice the problem immediately afterwards so I'm not sure what caused it.

I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

    Hi Matt,

Here is one or two thoughts to get you started. (No pun intended)

What is the gap on the plugs? Should be .023 - .027. A lower than normal battery may play a huge part in this. Use a known good battery or jump it and see if the problem still exist. Sync the carbs. What starter do you have. The older black colored on or the newer higher torque gold colored one? For cold weather use a narrower plug gap.
Don't allow this to keep kicking back or you will have to replace the starter sprag clutch.

Matt, I just have gone through a period of starting difficulties very similar to those you describe. Nothing helped (and the battery was ruined in the process) until my mechanic replaced the two SMD electronic modules. After that, starting became as easy as ever.

Starting problems may arise due to many causes, and your case may be different from mine. But if it's the same, brace for a bill of 2*$950 for the modules alone. Condolences.
