I suspect I have a voltage regulation (Ducati) problem, but I have not ruled out an indication problem.

At a fast idle, the Dynon reports both fluctuating volts and amps. Volts sit around 12 and move around between upper 11's and lower twelves, while the amperage dances up and down the range, mostly -3 or -1, but sometimes perhaps -13 or +25 - the amp bar basically never stops moving. Battery is new.

Heard that was normal, but I don't believe it - the volts are too low and the charging amps should settle in and perhaps fluctuate in much gentler cycles. I don't believe it should ever show a significant discharge rate. The problem has persisted long enough to know the battery is getting a charge.

I'd hope to confirm the Rotax/Ducati charging systems should not be at that "active".

I bet it is your connections check especially the A/C wires at the regulator. During takeoff and initial cruise the charge circuit gets overloaded because the engine start and avionics drain the battery since the charge circuit does not really do much while idling thus the battery gets drained so the charge circuit has to run everything plus recharge a battery and the weak links the connections they overheat. Try to only run the avionics that is absolutely needed until takeoff and make sure battery is charged before shut down.

    Hi Gregg,

I have a Dynon and many others do to. The volts normally do move around.1-.3 and the amps usually between -2 - +4 is normal. Your volt values are too low and with the amps also jumping more than normal I would guess you have a poor connection. Could be grounds, a plug in connection, ect... It is something you'll have to track down. I would start with tightening all grounds.
I wouldn't blame it on the reg/rec yet. Check the large plug that goes to the reg/rec and make sure it is squeezed in all the way and pull on each of those wires and see if they will pull out.

Thanks for the reality check, guys.

Glad to hear you don't see such wild amp swings (+15 to -15A and low voltage as "normal". My terminals are all "new" in appearance, but that doesn't mean a poor crimp or corrosion doesn't exist. I'm going to pick away at it with a second VOM and see if the Dynon isn't sensing properly and/or the power is not getting to the charge controller.

This has gone on for awhile, and I don't think a battery could drop half a volt in 15 or 30 seconds and still be strong enough to turn the starter reliably. My sense is it probably isn't reporting good information.

It appears I have a Dynon or wiring problem.

Adding a 2nd meter, my battery was resting at 12.6V, then rose steadily to 13.46, 13.47, 13.49, 13.5 after 10 minutes or so at 2000 rpm. Battery voltage remained rock steady while the Dynon EMS-D120 voltage rose and fell between 13.1 to 13.7V - did not see the 12V and lower from the last session. As before, the Dynon amps moved between +22A and -22A, most of the time +/- a few amps. The battery true voltage never responded to the amperage swings.

I can see the Dynon reporting lower voltage or amps due to a bad connection, not high. Maybe a bad ground would do that.

I read the battery senses on Dynon pin 24 and 25, but I don't yet have a schematic nor found a shunt that must be rigged somewhere in the harness. I winder whether the Dynon itself senses the battery or it's power feed, and/or if the Dynon is also not getting full voltage.

Anyone an expert on Dynon's harness schematic?

    Gregg,

Check the shunt wires. Take them off and use some scotchbrite on them and then tighten them back down tight.
