    Roger,

The vent tube on a Calidus Gyroplane is connected to the end of the airfilter. I don't know why but as the engine sits inside an cowling maybe the manufacture think the gasoline vapour should go into the airfilter and not somewhere else.
The tube is checked and is not clogged. Maybe the weight of the tube itself during the rough starting made it fall off.

Normally the engine is not hard to turn by hand when it is warm, but this is not checked as of late.

    Kevin,
Yes I agree that the magnetic plug is too contaminated. I cleaned it with gasoline to remove the oil so only the metal was left.
I checked the metal and found it to be "dust" only, no chips or other.
The time since last clean should not have been more than 100 hours. I will check with its papers tomorrow.

I will see to the gearbox receive service asap.

    Brian,
I suspect the debris is from a failed plastic thrust washer from the gearbox.
Unlike carbon the plastic doesn't crumble when you squash it so it is easy to tell if it is carbon or plastic.
Check the friction torque and see if it is lower than when measured on previous services, if it is then I would suggest you get the gearbox torn down & inspected.

    Hello Conrad.

Today I took some of the black pieces and tested it under a magnifying lens and they sure look like they are plastic. What puzzles me is that it looks like the plastic has become very hard, almost like glass with cracks all over. Though it is difficult to take a picture of black things I have attached a picture of one of the big pieces.

I also tried to dissolve it with Lamp Oil, Diesel and turpentine but it doesn't dissolve when crushed as I expected. When I crush it it rather disintegrates to very small pieces or dust.
    See picture

It seems to be debris from some kind of plastic as you suggest.

To get a better idea where this thrust washer is located in the gearbox, do you have a part or item number from the IPC? See attached pages.

    Any comment is appreciated.

Time to pull the gearbox and at least inspect it. The plastic thrust washer is up on top and under the first small gear. You will need a hydraulic press and gearbox tool to replace it and the box may need to be inspected and reshimmed. Since it is so hard I wouldn't expect this to be hardened rubber hose.
