Oil level

in 912 / 914 Technical Questions 8 years ago
It is possible to check the oil tank level , after turning the engine with the starter , without ignition of course !

    In my experience, the most effective and quickest way to burp the engine is to manually pull the prop through @ 12-16 cylinder compressions - slowly and pausing @ Top Dead Center for a second or two. Quickly motoring the engine with the starter does not give the compression gases sufficient time to flow past the rings into the crankcase and pressuring the crankcase oil up into the remote oil tank. I suspect that the "starter" method might eventually do the job, but at the unnecessary expense of starter wear and battery depletion. Besides, I prefer to evaluate the individual cylinder compressions as part of my engine preflight.

    Just do it by hand. The oil level check is not always an exact level. Just look for it to show trends and be in the approximate see place each time. If the engine is cold or hot can make a difference. It can sometimes be a tad higher or lower, don't let that bother you.

    The problem exists on a friend's Sirius TL3000.
    Prop needs to be rotated slowly at each compression for 20 to 30 rotations.
    Oil reserve tank is located too high which seems to be the problem.
    To avoid too much work, I wrongly thought about leaving the oil reserve where is was located and rotate the prop with the starter.
    I'll then start to work on the real solution, lower the oil reserve tank and locate it where it should be.

    Is your friend using a genuine rotax oil filter ?
    It has a check valve in it to help keep oil from going into crankcase and reduces efforts to burp the engine.

    Yes , we use a genuine rotax oil filter .
    I do not think the valve of the oil filter will help :silly: . The valve is useful if the filter becomes clogged ... no ?
