Is there any reason one cannot use a compact portable jump starter to get the Rotax 912 UL cranked in case the battery discharges, for example in a remote location? I used one of these for the first time this AM and was amazed at how well it worked--on a motor vehicle.

How about if you have one of the lithium batteries like Earth X or AeroVoltz?

A Jump Charger should not have any conflict with a 12v Lithium Vehicle Battery. You're OK!

Lead Acid batteries are nominally 12.6 volts.
Lithium Iron Batteries are nominally 12.8 volts.

Note: Lithium Iron 12v Vehicle type Batteries are not to be confused with lithium Ion 3.7v cell phone type batteries.

Flooded Lead Acid Batteries can tolerate up to 16 volts temporarily.
AGM and Gell Batteries are limited to 14.4 Volts Max!
Lithium Iron Batteries are limited to 14.6 Volts Max!

Your jump pack is paralleled to the on board dead battery and supplies either 12.6 or 12.8 volts.
It will only assist in starting the engine during the time it is attached.
It will not damage the dead battery, nor will it bring it back to life.
It will do nothing to actually charge the dead battery no matter how long you leave it attached.
The aircraft's charging system will attempt charging after engine start.

There is no reason that a plane parked for a month should not start easily.
It would not be recommended to use a jump pack on any regular basis and should only be used as a last choice measure to ferry a plane to a location where it can be determined that the battery is truly good or replaced.

A battery that has been discharged to the point that it will not start the engine is a battery that can not be trusted to start the engine on the next flight, or during the intended flight if need be, in an emergency.
The Safety of flight is in question until the condition of the battery has been verified.
