I am putting a "new to me" used 912 on my airplane and have just gotten everything back together to where I can start running the engine. The engine has sat for a while during the rebuild of a project I purchased, a Rans S-19. Got the engine running last weekend and am experiencing excessive mag drops on both A and B systems. At 4000 rpms I am getting a 600 rpm drop and rough running on both A and B.

I have rebuilt and synced the carbs and installed new plugs. The engine starts right up and idles smooth at 2000 rpms. It is smooth through transition all the way to full throttle where I am getting 5000 rpms static. When I do the mag check the engine runs the same on both A and B = Bad! :-)

Any direction you can provide will be most appreciated. Anyone with Rotax experience in North Mississippi? I know Ronnie is in South Mississippi but that at the other end of the state from me.

Thank you!

Are you trained and experienced with the carb overhaul?
    Are the slides perfectly aligned?
What position are the needle clips? try moving them both to #3 or #4 and see if the problem changes. Then you will know is is carburetion related.

    Yes and Yes,

    Found the problem.

Somehow the two top plug wires on the cylinders 2 and 4 got swapped.

That meant that it would run fine on both mags due to the firing of rotax on each stroke(waste spark) but each mag was dropping one cylinder.

Swapped them back to their correct position and I now get 50 to 75 rpm drop on each mag and smooth running!

    Thank you for responding!

I am surprised that it ran normally with both ignitions energized with the plugs crossed.
Normally you get the primary spark just before TDC on the compression stroke and an ineffective wasted spark just before TDC on the exhaust stroke.

With one set of plugs crossed wired you would also get a second primary spark just before BDC on the Compression stroke.
This would be ineffective as the fuel was already ignited a half-revolution earlier by the correct primary spark.

But, you would get the second wasted spark just before BDC on the Intake stroke.
This should have produced a BackFire out of the Carburator. ???
Apparently, the Mixture and Low-Pressure/Temperature combination does not allow the spark to light off the fuel. ???

    Very interesting!

    I agree!

That was what was confusing me, and did not lead me directly to the real problem as it ran perfect with both ingnitions on!

    Thanks
