Dear all,

Rotax 912 ULS year 2005, TTSN 530 Hour.
I've found this crack in the upper crankase in cyl 3 area . Any experience ? Any suggestion ? Any possible causes ? Note that 15 hour ago have been replaced all the cylinder (3 and 4) studs due to oil leack at the Cyl 3 top forward base.
The replacement has been done in acordance with the heavy maintenance manual and the new head torque procedure described by the new SI-912-025 Cylinder Head Torque Procedure.
Can this studs replacement be related to the crankase crack ? Note also that the engine has been flown in a hight outside temperature 37 - 39 degree Celsius but with the operating indicated temperature within the limits.

Lookig forward to hear from you

All the best
Stefano

    Stefano,

Same thing happened to me, 2001 912ULS, Serial #4427595 crankcase Serial #14827. At TTIS 696.0 leak from stud on top forward #3 cylinder, pulled stud and used Loctite 698 to seal it. This solved the leaking from the cylinder stud, then at TTIS 716.7 following a flight noticed oil drip, cleaned oily area and did a ground run. Leak coming from a crack on the top of the crankcase in area by cylinders one and three exactly as outlined in ROTAX SB 912-029.

Crack looked exactly like yours, half moon shape.

    Hi Stefano,
What is your wide open throttle rpm in flat and level flight?
This looks like an overstress crack. Things like this could happen if you had a prop overpitched to run under 5500 rpm. Some people had the props setup to only get 5000-5200 rpm WOT in level flight. On the gearboxes prior to the newer ones in about mid 2006 this could manifest itself with a cracked case in that area.

For those that have over pitched props there are NO redeeming qualities in doing so and it is stressing parts and not to mention gives you poor performance specs .
