What may be a reason(s) for oil seepage from the join between the cylinder head and cylinder? Thanks

Has the cylinder head ever been off? The nuts may just need to be torqued. I would do this before I thought something exotic was going on.

Hi Roger. The head has been off in the past yes. I see there is a SI with an updated version of the torque procedure for cylinder head bolts. Should I follow this procedure rather than the HMM? Also it specifies that cylinder heads should be torqued in pairs not in isolation is this correct (ie. both heads are removed and re-installed together even if an issue only existed on one)? I know in the past I have seen cylinder heads re-installed and re-torqued singly (for example to replace oil return tube o-rings). Can damage result from re-placing a cylinder head singly and if so what sort? Stupid question, but where does the oil come from from this area? Also, what might be the source of a leak in this area if the cylinder heads are not known to have been replaced? Many thanks

    Hi Shelley,
First thing is to make sure this is where the oil seepage is really coming from. Many see oil back along the head fins or further back and think it is coming from there, but in reality it is leaking from up front of the engine and the high flow air is just pushing it back. You may want to clean the area and keep an eye on it and just make sure this is the real seepage area. If it is just a seep there is no huge rush to torque something that may not even be the problem.
In your case since this is an all new torque I think I would do both heads and make sure you look up the torque "pattern" in the Heavy Maint. manual and the Rotax SI torque specs and not the Heavy Maint. manual specs.

When you re-torque, make sure you follow the SI, and not the HMM (the SI supersedes the Heavy Maintenance Manual - which hasn't been updated yet).

    Link to the SI
