Water in Carburators

in 912 / 914 Technical Questions 5 years ago
My bad, was not efficient with sumping due to another problem, however, water entered both carburators. I emptied both bowls, cleaned and resassembled followed by a thorough gasolator clean and sumping. Now engine (912 ULS) developes a very abrupt (two cylinder) roughness at approx. 3900 RPM. Start up from cold is normal, warm up normal, just no higher power setting available. It feels like one of the slides is not opening properly...?

    Need more info!
    What was the "Other" problem that caused all the water in the system?
    What type of fuel are you using?
    Have you replaced the waterlogged fuel?

    You can see if the slides are moving by removing the air filters and looking in the intakes.
    It might require an inspection mirror and great caution to avoid the turning prop.
    Or just assume the slide has a problem and pull the suspect carb.

    Hey, thanks for the come back...
    Yes, drained all 100 LL, have not used MOGAS
    The other problem was my hesitance to fully open the sump due to tank remnance fowling the drain, causing it to leak. I foolishly was sumping the other side and was not fiinding any water, sooooo.&%#$:(
    I agree, the next step will be to watch the slides during a tied down aggressive run up.

    If you are avoiding draining the sumps because of all the crud in the tanks...
    It sounds like you need to clean the tanks.
    Is the plane parked in the weather occasionally?
    You may need to replace the leaking gas caps.

    On second thought just attach a set of carb balance gauges.
    If either Slide is sticking, your Carb Sync will be off the chart.

    Exactly, I may have had a loose cap, watching that now, I have flushed that side a second time and found just a small amount of debris. Sump works well now! Flushed the entire fuel line with filter open and purged thru the carbs etc... I feels like the engine leans out on one side at 3800/3900...? Just gives up and I loose what feels like two cylinders...? When I back off the throttle, it smooths out nicely...!

    Time for a Carb Sync. That should reveal the problem.
