    What kind of plane?

This may or may not be the engine and may be wind in the cowl or other plane parts. I have seen these types of things a few times.

Sling 2..... I’ll check the cowl area. I’m hopin you’re right, but the first 50 hours or so were “buzz” free. What info do you have on a Rotax fix to this?

A buzz noise doesn't sound like a gearbox. More like an air leak or something lose the air is moving over and causing the noise.

Someone earlier in this thread mentioned only 20% of the 912is engines have gearbox problems. I don't know where anyone got those statistics. Virtually everyone I know with 912is engines have gearbox problems, but of course I don't know everyone......

Was talking to Phil Lockwood (Lockwood Aviation-Sebring, FL) and he mentioned Rotax has finally found the source of the problems with the 912is gear boxes, after 3 year of hell for us 912is owners. Has something to do with pressed on bushings which were never seated properly. Apparently the tools and procedures were always wrong from the factory, and of course, at the overhaul shops. Phil says now that he knows where the issue is, they he can correct it on future overhauls. Please don't quote me on the above because I probably have the details wrong, but it is something like that. One of the folks I know with a 912is is getting Phil to rebuild his gearbox next week (the 5th overhaul), and then I should have the correct details on the exact nature of the problem. Keep your fingers crossed that this is the real solution.

Roger Lee keeps hinting that Rotax has a solution, but he has never told us what the issue is that has caused all these problems. I am assuming this is the same issue / fix that Phil Lockwood is talking about. Roger, can you tell us what you have heard is the real problem? You are the guru and we are just desperate hapless owners with minimal knowledge and understanding. We really want a reliable powerplant, not one which we fear to get more than 100 miles from the airport.

Thanks to both Rogers! I’ll talk to the Lockwood folks as well, and maybe we can hopefully see a permanent solution to this problem.
