    RW & Roger

When you think about this in the context of the original plugs being a Rotax product, it puts a different perspective on the issue. And in that context, of course the inventory would run out and folks would have to start buying the new type. So with that line of thinking, I’m in agreement with RW.  However, I never really thought about the NGK plugs as a Rotax product, I don’t recall them ever saying Rotax on them (maybe I’m wrong, both of you would know better).  I just thought of the them as an NGK plug with a specific heat range and configuration, with the understanding they were the same as used in some motorcycles and snow mobiles.  So from that point of view, the old plugs will never run out, and I understand Roger’s position.

I guess what I’m saying is the Rotax language seems deliberately vague on this.  On one hand they want you to use the new plugs, both for legal and monetary reasons. But on the other hand I believe that they did not want to admit that the old plugs were likely NEVER approved by NGK for use in aircraft. I feel like it was a don’t ask don’t tell policy that finally came to a head.  So rather than explaining this to the customers in a clear way, the SB was couched in the typical “ in the course of continuous development and standardization…” language. If I was not reading this site I would know nothing of liability and legal issues, and may have chosen to continue buying the NGK plugs, while feeling justified in doing so since there has never been a mandatory change.

Introduction of new spark plug part no. 297656 and spark plug connector part no. 265249 for ROTAX® Engine Type 912 i, 912 and 914 (Series)

This is posted right under all the engine serial numbers on the bulletin.

Note **  It is not mandatory to retrofit engines which are currently equipped with old spark plug types and old spark plug connector types.

I must have misunderstood that the new Rotax plugs had the solid nipple on them AND that when switching to the new plugs for the first time that you were also going to have to replace the wire cap's to the new style to fit the plugs.

I'll have to ask Dean (from Lockwood) next week at Sun N Fun
