Just a down and dirty measurement for a spring. The gap between coils is about the thickness of your fingernail. This should keep you from over stretching the springs. Then I do use the :041 safety wire down through the center of the spring. The safety wire isn’t there to hold the joint together, but to keep broken springs from falling out over homes, runways and taxiways.
I have seen some springs fail due to over stretching, filled will silicone which causes heat retention and springs wired up against a hot pipe.
You don’t want an over stretched or under tensioned spring.
