Yesterday when I went to start my 916 iS all I got was a "click" from the starter relay.  I removed the glare shield and verified power at the output of the starter relay.  Then I removed top and bottom cowlings and verified power at the starter.  Apparently the starter had stopped at a "dead spot" and wouldn't turn with power applied.  I tapped the starter a bit to get it off the dead spot and was able to fly home.

Has anyone else experienced this?  Is it common?  Should I get a new starter?

    I am not a mechanic.................

Yes, it happened to me on top of a remote mountain in Idaho. We decided it was a battery issue and flew to the nearest town to buy an auto battery and some jump cables. Tied the battery in the back seat, taped the cables to the side of the plane, connected the battery and no go. Finally we put a steel tie down rod on the starter direct to the battery and it moved a bit. Then the engine started......

LESSON, if this happens, rotate the engine backward with the prop. The starter will be forced to turn and move from the dead spot. Should start then.

PS: I have a large auto battery and two 18' cables for sale.

PPS: Rotax said they have never had a starter problem. Sent it to them and they agreed it was bad, first one. But i never got a credit in return.

    Hello Bill

If you did not fill in a customer service information report, CSIR, then they cant process a claim.  You must be dealing with the wrong Service Centre perhaps.

    Cheers
