Hi all, hoping for some opinions and experience regarding mounting orientation of the ECU. My engine is a 915iS but I suppose this applies to any iS engine.

The installation manual says

"To prevent the ingress of liquids (moisture), the ECU must be mounted in a way that the connectors are facing downward."

The avionics package I have on my build (Sling tsi with avionics from midwest panel builders) has the ECU installed horizontally beneath the instrument panel shelf with the connectors facing the firewall.

Does anyone have an opinion on this? If there are a lot of folks that have installed the ECU in this orientation I'll be more comfortable otherwise I'm inclined to follow the Rotax instructions.

Thanks!

There are many ECUs installed in this horizontal configuration. Since the ECU is mounted on the cabin side of the firewall, behind the instrument panel, it can essentially be mounted in any position, as there is an extremely low chance of moisture or water reaching it.

You also need to take into consideration the ability to detach and attach the connectors to the ECU for maintenance or replacement. Installing it in a position where the connectors can be easily connected and disconnected will prevent a lot of swear words from your mechanic if he/she ever has to remove the ECU.
