Hello, I am going to install a Facet electric fuel pump in my airplane, it uses a Rotax 912, with Pierburg mechanical pump. Can you give me your opinion about the two systems attached ? Is possible to install it without one way check valve ? What's happen normally when a Pierburg mechanical pump is damaged, it blocks the fuel ?

    Hi Ricardo,

When the mechanical pumps fail they fail open. They do not block any fuel. Set up your electric pump in parallel and not series. There is no data that supports always running both pumps all the time, matter of fact just the opposite. There's no use in being paranoid. Depending on the installation it has caused carb flooding and high pressure, fuel spilling out of the carbs and rough running. That's typically old school teachings from the GA crowd. If the mechanical pump ever did start to fail you will have more than enough time to flip a switch. It isn't like an electrical failure. Your engine doesn't shut down that very second. The majority of the Rotax owners don't have dual pumps and they have been doing fine for over 20 years. Nothing wrong with a back up pump, but no need to run them all the time.

Hi Roger, Is not my intention to use both at same time, but to use the electrical one as backup, as you said. What do you think about my diagrams ? Can I use without one way valves ?

    Hi Ricardo,

If you put it in parallel then it will need a check valve.

If you check the Rotax 912 Manual, they recomend to intall a Electric Fuel Pump. Also they show you a schematic how to do it.

Thats is the way I have it on my Rans S12-XL with Rotax 912

I recomend you to follow what Rotax say.

Also, make sure you use a Fuel Return Line to the main tank as Rotax recomend.
