Got our aircraft (Skyranger) 9 months ago. It's 912UL has about 500 hours now
Serial number 4492427.
Was able to find out SOME of it's history a while back from a Rotax tech back east who kindly looked up some history. (Lost his contact info).

Wanted to get more specs and get on the factory direct-notifications-to-owners-email system so would automatically be notified if some isuess specific to this engine came up in the future, and to get more details.

So tried to register it in my name about 6 months ago via California Power Systems, but they were either unable or unwilling to do so as I have no documentation (other than bill of sale of the aircraft) showing I'm the owner (which of course I am). :( (It was originally purchased from Rotax by Kolb.) So if anyone knows some person through, or way, I can get it registered as mine with Rotax, sure would appreciate info.

But here's my current question:My official/original Rotax manual (ver 94-4, Rev. 6) says it has a 2.237:1 reduction gear (which I guess is standard) but then adds this note --
"Optional: the reduction gear can be provided with an overload clutch."
My _impression_ (and it's only that) is that most(all?) 912s sold in the USA were with the overload clutch. But how can I determine if mine has that supposedly optional feature?
Of can someone simply assure me that all 912s sold in the US since 1994 have the clutch?

    Hi Al,
The UL 80 HP engines don't have a gearbox slipper clutch as a standard installation. The ULS 100 HP engines do. The slipper clutch can be added to your gearbox.

OK, I don't have a clutch in the 912UL gearbox in mine then most likely, unless it was OPTIONALLY installed before I got it at 400 hours.

Two questions, if you don't mind?

    # The purpose is for engine protection in case of a prop-strike? Or is there any other reason?
    # If when it becomes time to rebuild the reduction gearbox do you think it might be at that time worth putting in an optional slipper clutch, and about how much do those cost?

    Thanks,
    Al

    Hi Al,

There are two reasons. One is the prop strike as you mentioned and it helps the 912ULS under the higher stresses of starting and stopping with it's higher compression especially with props like the solid Warp Drive and owners that have those props over 68" with nickel edges. It helps those loads to be less stressful. With the UL and the lower compression it isn't as big a factor. Rotax didn't think it was necessary to install it in certain engines, but would it help in the chance of a major prop strike, sure it would, that's its job.

    HI Roger,
You said a few days ago that the 912 ULS is fitted with a slipper clutch. I am in the process of trying to find out if my ULS does have a slipper clutch as I understand a soft start module is only effective when a slipper clutch is fitted.
I understand the configuration number (a 1,2,3 or a 4) which comes after the ULS part of the code indicates hub details etc and it is only the "3" which has a slipper clutch. I am not saying this to be clever but because I need to be sure before spending on a soft start module.
Roger, do you know a way of finding out via the Engine number or other route?

    Hi Richard,

Here is an easy way. Do you live in the US? Is your engine newer than 2003? The 912ULS 100hp started coming with the slipper clutch as a standard in the US after 2003.
