Can I safely hand prop my 100hp 912 engine?

    I don't think hand propping the 100 hp 912 uls will work. the ignition system requires 200rpm's before it produces spark.

    The high compression of the 912 uls would make it physically hard to do. Not to mention very dangerous.

    I have a 912 uls on my aircraft and would never attempt a hand prop to start it ! If the battery is run down then boosting would be the only option in my mind. If the starter goes then it would get replaced before the next start attempt.

    I am just an aircraft owner with a 912 uls on it, and have around 80 hrs experience with the 912 uls.

    Hi Tony,


    The short answer is NO and don't even try.
    First hand propping a 912ULS is not like hand propping a low compression magneto ignition Continental or Lycoming. For one it would be very dangerous and second you would never get it started because we don't have magnetos, but coils that need enough rpm to generate enough energy for the plugs. You could never get there by hand.

    I have handproping my UL 80 sea plane. I stay on my right float Giving a fast hand down The gear box make a fast rev. and the engine start direct. I vill say that there is no dangerous because you stay behind prop. and your hand aut get of the prop vhen it goes down!

    Hand propping a 912: My repairman course instructor heard of someone who saw someone do it once. And my friends dad's uncle knew a guy who could lick his elbow. :silly: I personally wouldn't try hand propping a 912, and I don't think it's possible with a slipper clutch installed. On the aircraft I normally deal with, the prop manufacturer (Woodcomp) says not to try.
