#2 Fire sleeve with clamped hose 2013-06-12 08:30
The 5-year rubber replacement articles have been very helpful and informative; however, one topic not covered involves situations where fuel/oil hoses are clamped onto barbed fittings and therefore the firesleeve stops short of the clamp.
Can the firesleeve be sealed with heat-shrink tubing that overlaps both the sleeve and the fuel/oil hose short of the clamp?
Clearly, using a band-type closure over the firesleeve unsupported by the metal nipple could result in pinching off the fuel/oil supply.

Heat shrink tubing isn't a good choice for the ends of fire sleeve. It doesn't have the proper thermal rating and certainly isn't an ASTM rated good idea and who knows what the chemical resistance might be. That said there are 2 MFG LSA companies that I have seen that do this and of course they use no fire sleeve clamps and poor clamps on the fuel hose too.

You can push the fire sleeve up over the clamps all the way over the fitting and you can either dip the end of the fire sleeve in a product called "End Dip" for $200 a quart and then have to let the hose sit while it dries or use a product called "Fire sleeve end wrap" (user friendly). It is an industry accepted standard, has the proper heat rating, seals the ends and it is far less expensive, easy to use and it is self vulcanizing. It takes only a small wrap on the end to protect everything. It can be used if you accidentally cut the fire sleeve a tad short.
Using Band-It clamps on the fire sleeve is an accepted way to seal and secure this hose and yes you can over do the tension. It should not be ratcheted down tight, only lightly snug and it should be all the way up on the fire sleeve to be on top of the fitting.
