That was what prompted my initial question. At what point in the build would it be reasonable for a builder to start the clock on the hose replacement? Roger has ventured an opinion for my situation based on his experience, but I'm sure Rotax would have another opinion that was more conservative. Ultimately as the builder, I have to make the call and take the responsibility.

    Roger,
Time to post the video with the leaking fuel or oil hose from some time ago. Will help make up your mind about the five year rule.

Here is that video. This came from a Rotax engine and the hose was right at 7 years. I did nothing to the hose other than plug off one end with a bolt and hook up my bug sprayer to the other. The reason this was originally found was fuel was all over the pad after an engine start. I was accused by someone that I staged this. I did not and this is the way it came off the engine. This is usually one of the first places to fail is up where it is crimped onto the fitting. Hose gets old just sitting around. Ozone and chemicals and dry rot all play a part even if the engine isn't running. I do a lot of hose changes every year and get to see a lot of hose. Gate's hose MFG would like to see hose changed at 4 years because they show a big spike in failures when it gets older. Better safe than sorry. Will hose last longer, sure it will. Will some fail sooner, sure it will. So a line had to be drawn in the sand someplace and this was a good place especially since we can't just pull over to the curb.

Wouldn't it make sense to replace all the rubber hoses with stainless/teflon? I know at least one company--Aircraft Specialties--offers a kit.

    HI Ken,

Teflon is a great hose and holds up very well and longer than rubber hose, but the cost benefit may not be there for many people. Rotax uses it now for the hose that feeds both carbs off the fuel assembly block mounted on the carb balance tube. Most people don't have the tools to create Teflon hose with the proper fittings and would need to have these pre-made by another company where rubber hose can be put in place by the owner or mechanic at the hangar. It would boil down to personal preference and a cost decision. If you use just rubber fuel hose the hose cost may be a around $30+/- and all Teflon hoses would cost around $500+ and they would have different fittings. If you used Teflon for oil and fuel it will be around $1K+/-.

There is nothing wrong with either hose set it just becomes a personal decision.
