Does anyone have a recommendation for a good oil thermostat, for a 912ULS? It takes me about 10-15 minutes to get up to 120 degrees before take-off and sometimes, it would be nice to shorten this up.

Thermostasis is not a bad choice.

I have used the mocal oil thermostat since 2010 , it helped for sure.

I put a coolant thermostat in as well in 2011 , thermo-bob , it helped some more.

I put a reiff engine preheat system on in 2012 it also helps to preheat , your oil is starting warm.

At -15C with preheating and both thermostats , its approx. 4 minutes to 120 F from start . Its warm before I get everything setup and settled in the cockpit !

I have an oil thermostat and it still seemed to take a while to warm up in winter.
I fitted an E-Z Heat system which cuts warm up considerably.
I hated "warm up" cutting into my tbo.....lol

Is an oil thermostat required or recommended on the 912? Better with or without?

Just an option and personal choice. Some like them and swear by them and others don't.

I personally don't care for them on my plane. I'm sure you will hear from owners here that love them. For me it's a pain to work around to save 1-2 minutes on warm up and they usually only go to 180F unless you get one with a specific higher temp rating. I have a few guys at my field with the same plane and a thermostat and we are close to warm up times. I think there would be a bigger difference in times if the oil system were much larger than what we have. There would then be a much larger volume of oil to heat up.

Personal choice. Your decision. Either way you won't be wrong.
