Respected forum members,

I am trying to estimate the Direct Operational Cost of a Rotax 912 S engine up till its TBO and its recovery to 00 hours.

Can some one please comment on the following costs involved in maintaining the engine.

The cost of Brand new Engine:
The cost of Gearbox Overhaul:
The cost of complete Overhaul:
Cost of a Oil filter which is needed every 50 hours:
Cost of a spark plug which is needed every 200 hours:
Cost of Rotax recommended Air filter:

What parts would I be needing other than the ones listed above.

Thanking everyone in advance.

Regards,

Costs of these items varies quite a bit depending on where you buy them. If I were you I would just call Lockwood and have them price them out for you. Lockwood is not the cheapest place to buy, but their prices are not too bad on some items, and actually quite competitive on others.

To your list I would add the following items:
    Fuel filter
    Float bowl gaskets
    Exhaust springs

And don't forget the 5-year hoses / rubber replacement ($$$).

Here are some estimates. These may vary in different regions

I am trying to estimate the Direct Operational Cost of a Rotax 912 S engine up till its TBO and its recovery to 00 hours.

Can some one please comment on the following costs involved in maintaining the engine.

The cost of Brand new Engine: $16.7K
The cost of Gearbox Overhaul: $450-$850 (this really depends on worn parts)
The cost of complete Overhaul: $12.5K
Cost of a Oil filter which is needed every 50 hours: $23
Cost of a spark plug which is needed every 200 hours: Approximately $2-$3. Change plugs every 75-100 hrs.
Cost of Rotax recommended Air filter: There is no such thing, It's different for each aircraft, but a standard
    reusable K&N is approximately $30
5 year rubber replacement approximately $2500-$4K depending on who does it. Some shops are a lot more expensive than others.

What parts would I be needing other than the ones listed above.

    Thanking everyone in advance.

These prices may vary some, but should get you in the ballpark.

    p.s.
In the US you can go "on condition" when you get to the TBO.

I come from the Lycoming engine world and am trying to learn the Rotex world. The estimates you provided are very helpful. But here's a question - is the "reliability" of Rotax about equal to a Lycoming? I mean generally my experience with Lycoming has a been that it would always start and run and could be relied on to go trouble free between 100 hour inspections. I was comfortable planning a 1,500 mile trip and could expect to get there and back without the expectation of engine trouble grounding me halfway. Can I expect similar reliability from the Rotax? Thanks for any guidance.

    Hello Michael,

Reliability concern is a state of mind aside from the fact of the so called ENGINE REPUTATION!

    Let me ask you this!

How do you measure reliability of any engine aside of the fact that there are thousands of users out there that swear by the product in terms of performance and actual reliability.. Please consider these facts:

The engine is as reliable as the service you perform on it whether its Lycoming or Rotax.

I have been working on both engines for a long time and I could tell you this.. Rotax is a great little engine. If you do everything by the book, it will start every time and will take you to many FAR FAR FAR FAR places and back with little fuel consumption... How about that!
