    How come? Are the turbos really unreliable?

    The 914 has extra complexity (more points of failure, as seen above), greater weight (16 lbs), and greater cost (about 60% more!) than the 912 ULS.  The 912 ULS, a newer design, has nearly equivalent power, except at higher altitudes, or for the 5 minutes you are allowed to go past the detent and go "full turbo" (115hp) on the 914.  Since I don't often fly at high altitudes, or on short fields, it was an easy choice for me.

    I always thought the lower compression of the 914 would make it more reliable in spite of the turbo. I guess I was wrong.
