Checking for new messages

I apologize in advance but I have a problem checking for new messages. On other sites when I want to view just the new messages and not have to read all of the previous ones, when you click on the topic you wish to view, it takes you directly to just the new messages and bypasses all the rest. For some reason I have not found out how to do this on this site. If I have missed something, would someone please be kind enough to tell me how to access just the new messages. Many thx.
