Bill, I will try flying it without the cowling the very next hot day we get here... looks like next Thursday. Thanks for the reminder. I did fly it 6 weeks ago without the cowl and found it very good and was thinking at the time that even an engine low on water would still fly cool in this situation, but as I remember, that day was not a warm day. It will be very interesting to do it again in hotter conditions. BTW... I found the elevator not very responsive and also with a light shudder at low speed...but | suppose thats normal without the cowl.

There were no tell tale signs of carbon according to your last post, so thats a relief, but I think I will do that checks you speak of asap anyway, because it might show some marks that might explain why I lost the rpm on WOT. I tried a while ago but broke my allen key trying to get a bolt out. I will buy a better quality set and try again.

Thanks for the tip Bill. And I hope it does become "Aachem's razor" haha... at least then I will know everything else is ok. I have my doubts though somehow because I never noticed any over heating last summer. Maybe I wasnt noticing because of other problems I had at the time.

Oh BTW..... Those measurements in the pic of the last post were in metric... translated = 9" x 6".

George, can you please post a pic of the baffels to give me an idea how you did that? There is only a small part of my rad not getting direct air through the cowl, so I guess when you multiply that by 2 (2 rads) it might be playing a part in the temps. BTW... flew it last night in much cooler conditions (OAT = 16C) and I was able to climb 1500" before redline which is a 1000" better than in 30F deg previously, and she cruised along at only 150 instead of 170 which was encouraging. So what I now am thinking is that it may very well be Aachem's razor... the radiator is too darn small!!!! Not sure how I can make it bigger though, and still remain inside the cowling.

Hey guys, just had another thought (probably crazy), plz tell me if I am wrong.

I have the 582 grey head inverted. Now supposing the oil injection system was not accurate with the amount of oil being used... could this account for less RPM? You know, less lubrication = more friction = less rpm = more work for the engine = more heat = partial seizure... and so on. What you think? Sorry to be a dick with engines.

    Mike,

Running the engine inverted is no problem at all. The oil injection will work as designed regardless of the engine position. The only thing you might occasionally see with an inverted engine is some oil fouling of the plugs after the engine sits a while. Even this usually only results in occasional slow starting.

Since the engine did run cool in the past, Nick might have hit on the problem. You may have a partial blockage or buildup in the rads. You could take them to a radiator shop and have them chemically cleaned. Even a slight buildup of calcium or other deposits inside can have a big effect on heat transfer.

    Bill.

Hi Mike, I posted 5 pictures but I don't know if they will get posted. When I pressed submit I got an error message. I'll try to post one here and see what happens.
