Do you have spark? If so will it fire if you use starting fluid?

Were there cracks in the coils or an opening where the lead enters the coil?

You need to start at the beginning. All we can do is offer you advice, it's up to you or a hired mechanic to do the troubleshooting. Saying you don't think it will spark isn't helpful.

Engines only need 3 things to run:

    Spark (properly timed)
fuel and air in the proper proportion
    compression

You can remove the starter assembly, if it is a broken spring you can order one from Rotax.

Is there good compression when you hand prop it?

A 2 cycle engine that wasn't stored (pickled) properly, which was stored in a part of the country with rain or high humidity (Not the southwest) can be a time bomb waiting to go off due to rust on the needle bearings inside the engine. Unless it was pickled or started and ran EVERY 2 or 3 weeks, rust can develop.

I sincerely hope you have the engine torn down and inspected by a Rotax repairman, or consider a BRS chute or flying with a motorcycle helmet on for the first 20 hours, until the engine starts to prove itself. I would spend a lot of time in the pattern or over good landing sites until you are comfortable with it. I'm not trying to spook you, but I know several people who have had catastrophic engine failures due to this.

I was told there were wires behind the pull start housing, I pulled the rope housing off checked those wires. After putting the pull cover back on it worked fine then all of a sudden it stopped and pulled freely. I took it off to see why but could not determine the cause, can you help me with this

    Dave,

Here's a link to a webpage with a diagram of the starter, and instructions on how to disassemble it, and put it back together. Note the reference to the proper lube. You don't want lube that is too "slippery". Molykote G-N paste has the correct properties, and this could be your problem. You need a certain amount of drag to engage the assembly. I've heard you can use dental floss around the pawl assembly to increase drag and engage the starter, but this is a hillbilly fix so I cant recommend it. Better to use the proper lube if you can.

You can also search google and youtube for videos on the 503 starter that may make more sense. A picture is worth a thousand words.

If you need the Molykote, here's a link to a place you can buy it. The tube is good for 60 months after you open it, but I think it will last much longer if you keep it in your fridge. Wear rubber gloves when you handle it, that stuff will stain your hands like ink. Not good for those of us that make a living as hand models. B)

Thanks Kevin for the great links, hopefully this will work. So I can check the spark. I did check for spark before, but did not know that bottom of plug had to be grounded to have spark across the plug? Will get back with you guys tomorrow, just hope nothing else goes wrong, I am batting a thousand. Like I said I don't believe I will have spark, just because of the way it does not even try to cough or sputter, think I am still have problem with what ever the driving rain and wind did.

    Thanks again

When watching the video, I noticed the end of the spring that extended to outer ridge of the plastic to engage a lip that would stop the spring from spinning. The spring in this one stops before it reaches that outer up raised plastic, does not come close to engaging that stop lip. To look at it, it does not look broke but I am sure it is. Where would a person who lives near or next to nothing in the mountain state get a spring like this? I believe I am going to try to find a mechanic somewhere around here that will or can get this thing started, I am not having any luck. Not sure if a small engine mechanic around here can work on these types of motors but will find out. In the mean time, is there a vendor you can recommend that I can get the spring ordered from.

I was able to un wrap one winding on the spring to extend the broken end to catch the lip on the raised plastic rim. It works fine but still need spring. With the fixed spring I was able to determine no spark at plug.
