I have replaced the rubber ring, part nr. 850040, 152.5x2.5x5, between the cylinder head and the cylinder.

What I noticed was that the old rubber ring was different from the new rubber ring.

The old ring, lower half is appr. 3.5mm and the upper half is 2.5mm. This was not because it has been squeezed for years between the cylinder and the cylinder head, it was made like this.

The new ring is just a small rectangle of 2.5x5mm.

Also, the space where the ring has to go in is actually a bit to large, to wide, for the new ring.

The overall ring does fit in the gap but it has to much space there on the sides.

Question: Is this normal? Did I order or receive the wrong part?

Has anyone seen this before?

What year is your 582? ( If you don't know, post the serial number and I can look it up for you...)

While waiting for the answer to whether you have the correct part or not...

The O-ring is one of the most misunderstood sealing methods there is.

It is also one of the most simple and forgiving devices around, but its proper design has a few subtle but critical details.

The correct fit of an O-Ring is Not what most people expect and even the Designers of the Space Shuttle Booters got it wrong.  Very Wrong!

An O-Ring should be slightly loose in the Groove and lubricated so that it is free to move under pressure.

If you design it to be a tight fit, what you end up with is a Round-Gasket and Not an O-Ring.

See Page 1-3 of this Parker Handbook for details.

Hi Bill, interesting material to read about o-rings. You don't think about this normally.

The o-ring closest to the piston fitted perfectly. However, no grease was mentioned in the manual.

My worry is the large outer ring, which is rectangle 2.5x5mm.

The original ring was stepped from 2.5mm to 3.5mm and fitted perfectly.

Why is this new ring different?

And is it a problem if the new ring is so loose? And is it necessary to lubricate the ring before installing?
