100LL use in 582

Category: 2 Stroke Technical Questions one month ago

My airplane runs a Rotax 582 gray head engine and unfortunately I don't have access to ethanol free unleaded auto fuel. My airplane is a Kitfox and is old enough that the fuel tanks are not ethanol safe, so running any amount of ethanol is not desired. That said, I have been running 100LL and have recently heard about 4-stroke Rotax users using 100LL with Decalin additive with good success.  So my question is this.  If forced to run 100LL in a 582, should I be using the Decalin additive like the 4-stroke guys use?

Thank You,

John Brannen

Yes, Use the Decalin. It isn't a cure all, but definetly helps.

Thank you.  I've just ordered it.

Decalin, a bicyclic organic compound, is an industrial solvent. A colorless liquid with an aromatic odor, it is used as a solvent for many resins or fuel additives. It is the saturated analog of naphthalene and can be prepared from it by hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst.

Cut and pasted from Wikipedia, make sure your fuel tanks are compatible.

Fuel in this case is more corrosive than Decalin for plastics. The volume amount of Decalin used 1/2 oz. per 10 gallons is not enough to cause issues within a  fuel tank.

Yeah. It seems like the guys concerned about their tanks like me who can't get ethanol free autogas have done fine wil decalin. I haven't heard about any bad effects amongst the Kitfox community with 100LL and Decalin use, but lots of bad reports on ethanol belnded fuel use.
