Hi,

I have been using the Rotax 582 Mod 99 engine for over 25 years, with experience operating more than five engines through multiple overhauls. I am based in India and have exclusively used Indian MOVGAS throughout this time without encountering any issues.

Given the current situation, where Indian MOVGAS contains more than 10% ethanol (currently around 12.5%), I have been advised to switch to 100LL aviation fuel for use with Rotax 912 engines.

I would appreciate it if you could provide some clarity on the following points:

1. What has been the general experience and track record of using 100LL fuel with Rotax 582 engines?
2. Is it acceptable and safe to continue using Indian MOVGAS with RON 91 and 12.5% ethanol content in Rotax 582 Mod 99 engines?
3. Is there any additional inspection to be carried to use MOVGAS with 12.5% ethanol?

Hi there...I see no other answers have come forward.  The 10% ethanol as a maximum was determined by tests many years ago by Rotax with engines in the field.  The problem as you exceed 10% is the fuel has less energy and due to the higher oxygen content you may need to richen the mixture.  It also emits more nitrous oxide after the burn.

Rotax has done no testing on the 2 strokes of any blends of fuel above 10%.  Given they no longer produce the 2 strokes for aircraft it is highly unlikely they will pursue it in the future.  I would monitor your EGT carefully to be sure that it is not too lean.

As for inspections you risk more contamination from lead with Avgas than with the ethanol Mogas.  I would not worry about extra inspections.

    Cheers
