Can someone tell me what this is in the bottom end of my 503? Does this look normal?

It appears as if you changed oil supply from one company to another.  This is typical build up when you switch between synthetic and petroleum oil.  The risk is that your rings might be gummed up as well and you may have compression issues.

    Good luck.

    Matthew,

Does not look very healthy!.  Is this as cdi or points engine?.   Looks like rust but I don't think tht what it is.

Has the type of oil used changed.. i.e. mineral to synthetic or reverse?

There are particulates in the film coating everything,  Those will be imbedded in the crankshaft bearings.

Do you have any history on this engine?

In any case the crankshaft should be removed for inspection.  I would imagine it will have to be replaced due to contamination (it's

not likely that the bearings can be cleaned enough to make it reliable.  Let us know the history if available.

I purchased this engine used.    I have been running Amsoil oil.
