I have friends who have purchased an aircraft project including a 912ULS engine not used for many years.  It was manufactured in 2004 and used on a SEARAY.  All of my experience has been with three 912ULS, in three different airplanes but constantly maintained so I am interested in recommendations on what process is best used to repair/replace/overhaul an engine that has been out of service for years...Thanks

Serial Number 4427900 912ULS

    Hello Mike

Given that this engine is over 20 years old it should have a full inspection.  The best would be for an overhaul, that is what is recommended by Rotax.  Old engines, depending on how they were stored, can have rust, crusty oil passages and seal deterioration.  Even electrical wiring can begin to fail as the oils in the plastic coatings off-gas and become older.

My recommendation is to return it to one of the independent Service Centres and have a full inspection.  Since 2004 there may be a lot of outstanding service bulletins that need compliance.  You have the option as an experimental if you wish to not follow the Rotax recommendations but without a complete inspection it is impossible to guess at the level of any age related issues may be found.

    Cheers
