I stand corrected - From somewhere I had the gearbox inspection intervals at ;
600 hrs for engines using more than 30% AvGas
1200 hrs for engines using less than 30% AvGas

Hi Sean,
It's still either 600 hrs or 1000 hours depending on the engine and 100LL use. See the new Line Maint. manual. page 05-20-00 page 14 and special note below the inspection tables.

New engine it is!
This is after only 4 hours of running with fresh oil, filter and obviously a clean mag plug.
We found these black deposits in the oil tank too (they also returned after the 4 hours of running), it's not metal (we're not sure what it is) but something inside the engine is breaking up in addition to the metal swarf being produced.

Once again, the magnetic plug does not look as if the oil has been removed. The presence of the oil will always make the accumulation of ferrous material look a lot worse than it actually is. Post a photo of plug with oil removed.
Have no idea what the "stuff" in the oil tank is.
You will get a better idea of how things stand, by opening the oil filter, removing as much oil as possible, from the media (pleated paper stuff), opening up and examining any material caught there - post some photos of what you find.
No offence intended Karl, you seem determined to prove your engine & gearbox are in a bad way, rather than trying to be objective and fully explore the symptoms.

Yes the oil has been removed from the mag plug (in a cup of brake cleaner to be specific), what you see there is swarf and lots of it!
Here's a photo before the oil was removed just to settle your mind.
If you read my first post I said the filter was opened, inspected and was fine (this was the first thing I suggested after seeing the mag plug).
No offence taken but it's quite the opposite, this post was just to update the curious as to my findings I've not detailed everything we've done.
All that metal has appeared in only four hours of running (there should be nothing but a few specs on there) which even if it was a car engine I would be stripping it to find the cause and expecting to find a worn bottom or top end (I'm an engine builder and tuner of 20 years).
